March Online Meet Part 2 – GertLUG Hosts

After being treated to a great meeting hosted by Richard from Brick Alley earlier in the month, the second meet of the month saw Brick Alley’s Sunday afternoon slot at 1pm taken over and hosted by James (Secretary) and Emily (Social Secretary) of GertLUG. To kick things off we had some quick introductions and a question of “What is your favourite element?”. With 17 attendees from both GertLUG and Brick Alley present there were some…

Richard Hopkins – Saved by LEGO?

Richard Hopkins has had a short but significant journey with LEGO that produced one of the very best MOCs seen at the 2019 Bristol Brick show (his outstanding Victorian Train Station) and there’s definitely a lot more to come. Here’s his story, in his own words: “There was a time in my life when I hit a wall. After years of bad choices and another marriage over I turned to LEGO, not knowing how it…

March Online Meet Part 1 – Brick Alley Hosts

March 16th, 2020, somewhere in the UK (in-fact, many different places in the UK at the same time). So, something a little bit different happened for our March online member’s meet. Firstly, there were two of them (the write-up for the 2nd will appear shortly). But secondly, and more importantly, the first meet was hosted by Richard (otherwise known as Bricks McGee) from Brick Alley LUG. For anyone who doesn’t already know him, Richard is…

You’ve heard of ‘Couch to 5K’ but how about ‘Zero to 10K Supporters’

We recently caught up with GertLUGger Simon Scott about his journey to 10,000 supporters… “I’ve recently been fortunate enough to have one of my LEGO designs achieve support on LEGO Ideas. For those of you unfamiliar with the site, LEGO Ideas is a platform that encourages LEGO users around the world to submit ideas and gain supporters with a view to potentially having LEGO choose their design to be made into an official set. “10,000…

GertLUG Online Meet-up: Feb 16th 2021

February the 16th saw us enjoy our second meet-up of the year with a delightful 15 member romantic (well, perhaps not) online Zoom chat hosted by our Chair, PK. Before the meet, and with a hint of Valentine flavour, members had been asked to build something flower, vase or plant themed with all entries posted on our Facebook page, voted for and the winner receiving a LEGO prize. Photos of these entries are shown below.…

International Women’s Day

Hannah and Emily went to ‘Women in LEGO’ virtual event and here is an overview of what happened. This event was organised by the Vice Chair of Northern Brickworks, Amanda, because their membership wanted something specifically for women and why not do it for International Women’s day. The first organised speaker was Jessica Farrell, of LEGO Masters fame, speaking about how she first got into LEGO. As a 7-year-old girl she loved playing with LEGO…

Meet the Ambassador – Nick Amos

Over the next few months we will be introducing you to each member of the GertLUG committee via a series of blog posts on here, and there is no better place to start than with GertLUG’s very own infamous ambassador, Nick Amos! As someone who founded the Bristol Brick Show and has steered the GertLUG ship from the very beginning you will all likely already know the name (you’ve probably even been badgered by him…

Sustainable Squad Project on LEGO World Builder

With the LEGO Group’s focus on sustainabilty over the last few years, with plans to make all products sustainable by 2030, GertLUG member James Brand and David Warner came up with an idea for a LEGO theme featuring sets that focus on this subject. David has supplied us with the below article to tell us about their project. “Before we dive deep into our design, it is paramount that we first talk about LEGO World…

Mecha Models in Official LEGO Sets

Following on from the previous two articles on mecha, GertLUG member YL Tan brings us a third installment. First was an introduction on what mecha are, featuring three mecha MOC-builders of note. Then we had the December MOC of the Month, showcasing the KS22 Keisha mech built by YL Tan himself. And now he’s back once again to talk about the LEGO mecha sets that’ll get our creative engines going, the gateways to mecha MOCs…
